As a CARE ambassador, the successful businesswoman will help promote the international organization’s work to defend dignity and fight poverty worldwide.

“I am very excited to be involved with an organization that places such an emphasis on empowering women and girls,” said Henkel. “The vital work of CARE provides women with the possibility of changing the world. These women will become empowered and have more freedom by making the right choices and taking responsibility. These values are very dear to me. We have the power to change the world.”

Henkel is an expert in business and international relations. Before arriving in Canada, she was the political and economic advisor to the U.S. ambassador in Algeria. She is now the owner of Danièle Henkel Inc., a health and beauty company that has been operating in Quebec for more than 15 years. She became well-known in Canada for her role as the only female “Dragon” on the Radio-Canada version of CBC’s Dragons’ Den, “Dans L’Oeil du Dragon.”

“The reason why I have joined CARE is because of its commitment to long-term change in the lives of women and girls worldwide. I want to help and make a difference, and it all starts with education. It is essential to work with local communities to achieve sustainable improvements and that is why I intend to travel to the field as part of my mandate with this organization. I am very impressed by CARE’s international development work and am really excited to be part of the organization,” said Henkel.

With her influence in the business world, Henkel is well positioned to bring CARE’s message to the public in support of its Muskoka Initiative maternal and child health projects in Africa. CARE is currently delivering three significant maternal and child health projects in Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Malawi, which will reach more than 2.3 million people.

According to Richard Wiseman in his study¹, done in 2007, only 12% of us will achieve our goal this year. That’s a little bit depressing, but fear not, there are a few tricks we can use to achieve our resolutions and, not surprisingly, they differ for men and women.

But first a little bit of history². The tradition that we call today “New Years resolution” is old, very old. The ancient Babylonian used to make promises to their Gods at the beginning of each year, to returned borrowed items, and pay back debts. A very good resolution if you want my opinion. Forward a little bit in time and we have the Romans, making promises to the God Janus. In medieval times, knights renewed their vows right after Christmas.

What about today ? According to University of Scranton³ the top 10 New Year Resolutions are as follow

1. Lose Weight
2. Getting Organized
3. Spend Less, Save More
4. Enjoy Life to the Fullest
5. Staying Fit and Healthy
6. Learn Something Exciting
7. Quit Smoking
8. Help Others in Their Dreams
9. Fall in Love
10. Spend More Time with Family

Going back to the study,

Men were significantly more likely to succeed when asked to engage in either goal setting (e.g., instead of trying to lose weight in general, aiming to lose a pound each week), or focusing on the rewards associated with achieving their goal (e.g., being more attractive to the opposite sex).

It then follows with an interesting fact about women.

Women were more successful when they told their friends and family about their resolution, or were encouraged to be especially resilient and not to give up because they had reverted to the old habits (e.g., if dieting, treating a chocolate binge as a temporary setback rather than as failure).

22% more men achieved their goals when they used the goal setting technique. As for women, an extra 10% made it, just by being supported by their family and friends.

Although New Year resolutions have religious origins, we use them today in a quite different manner. We want to keep up in a world that is getting more chaotic and faster everyday, we want to be healthy, we want to find the time to be around those we love, to be more generous and we want to fall in love.
